Coyote StageWorks to kick off 2012-13 Season With Hit Comedy SOUVENIR

Coyote StageWorks to kick off 2012-13 Season With Hit Comedy SOUVENIR

Coming to the Annenberg Theatre for Two Weeks: Friday, November 23rd through Sunday, December 2nd.

Long before the hysterically funny, train wreck auditions of American Idol and long before the comedic warbling of Merv Griffin’s Mrs. Miller, there was a sweetly deluded songbird ever in search of the right key. Her name was FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS.

Coyote StageWorks is thrilled to kick off its 2012-13 Season at the Annenberg Theater with Stephen Temperley’s hit Broadway comedy SOUVENIR, the true-life story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York socialite in the 1930’s and ‘40’s who captured the heart of the Big Apple with her famously terrible singing voice.

Yes, Mrs. Jenkins’ coterie of famous friends like Noel Coward and Tallulah Bankhead made her the toast…and the joke of New York City.  While she honestly believed herself to be a great soprano, in truth, Florence was incapable of singing two consecutive notes in tune. It was her naivete and love of music that made Florence Foster Jenkins special, and it was her trusted accompanist Cosmé McMoon who ultimately protected this gentle spirit from the harsh truth. Florence’s annual recitals at the Ritz Carlton (where she also lived) earned her cultish fame that culminated in 1944 with a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall.

Just one week after her bravura performance at this pantheon of music, Florence Foster Jenkins died…a star!
