The Fresh Pick of the Week
From the Certified Farmers Market
Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the Week: Apples and Pears, Oh My!
Certified Organic Apples and Pears from Ha’s Apple Farms are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers’ Market. The markets are thrilled to have Ha’s Apple Farms back for another season with their wonderful varieties of apples and pears, plus fresh-made jams, jellies, syrups, vinegars, and dried fruits.
Apples and Pears are pomaceous fruits. They grow on deciduous trees that blossom in the spring and produce fruit in the fall, and have been eaten by humans since ancient times. Apples and Pears figure prominently in human history, as well as in myths and legends from almost every culture. There are quite a few varieties of both, due in large part to both natural variation and hybridization by humans; some 7,500 known varieties of Apples and 3,000 varieties of Pears. Apples and Pears are quite versatile foods, and can be eaten fresh, or be cooked, canned, dried and even squeezed into juice. The fruits can also be used for making jellies and jams or ciders.
