Coyote StageWorks Announces Fourth Season;
Returns To Annenberg Theater.
Coyote StageWorks is returning to the Annenberg Theater for its fourth season with something for everyone – a comedy, a musical, a drama, and a very special event with an “all-star cast!” Coyote Stageworks Artistic Director, Chuck Yates says, “As a company, we feel so fortunate to be back in the beautiful Annenberg Theater. There is no other theater like it in the desert, and presenting our shows in that wonderful space makes them magical experiences even before the curtain goes up. We’re thrilled to call the Annenberg our home again this year.”
Yates continued, “Coyote StageWorks is thrilled to welcome the Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel as an official sponsor of the 2012-13 season. CSW is also pleased to offer our first Subscription Series to our local patrons and visitors to the valley. If you buy a ticket to all three “Main Stage” shows in advance, you save 20%. Season Subscribers will also have the first opportunity to purchase tickets to our “All-Star” Gala Benefit performance of “The Women” before single tickets go on sale to the public.”
The first show in CSW’s season is the TONY Award Nominated comedy, SOUVENIR, by Stephen Temperley. SOUVENIR is the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a real member of 1940’s New York society. Although Jenkins believed she was a magnificent, operatic soprano, in truth, she was incapable of singing two consecutive notes in tune. Blissfully unaware of her handicap, Florence staged annual recitals at the Ritz-Carlton, where she resided. As news of her terrible singing spread, so did her celebrity. She became both the toast and the joke of the town. Highlighting her career was a single concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, which famously sold out in two hours. By turns hilarious and poignant, SOUVENIR tells Florence Foster Jenkins’ story through the eyes of her trusted friend and pianist, Cosme McMoon. SOUVENIR opens the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23 and continues through Sunday, Dec. 2. SOUVENIR is the perfect way to entertain guests and kick-of the holiday season!
January brings yet another first for Coyote StageWorks – a spectacular One-Night-Only Gala Benefit – a staged reading of THE WOMEN by Clare Booth Luce. Presented by WELLS FARGO, this wickedly funny, streamlined version of the hilarious catfight that made “jungle red” nail polish synonymous with sharp-clawed backstabbing will definitely be a star-studded night to remember. Scheduled to appear*: Lucie Arnaz, Kaye Ballard, Nancy Bleiweiss-Nevil, Mary Jo Catlett, Carole Cook, Beth Grant, Alix Korey, Michele Lee, Lorna Luft, Stefanie Powers, Charles Busch, and many more surprise guests! The performance will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 7 p.m. *Performers are subject to change without notice.
Coyote StageWorks returns to the Annenberg in February with its second offering – another Mid-Century Modern treasure – SUDS: THE ROCKING 60’S MUSICAL. Created by Melinda Gilb, Steve Gunderson and Bryan Scott, with Musical Arrangements by Steve Gunderson, SUDS is the delightful story of Cindy, a lovelorn girl working in a 1960’s Laundromat, whose life is changed forever when her two guardian angels magically appear to teach her about boys, true love and surviving in a tough “fluff-n-fold” kind of world. SUDS is loaded with good clean fun, bubbling energy, and over fifty musical favorites from the 60’s including: “Where the Boys Are,” “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’,” “Respect,” “I Feel Good,” “Walk On By,” and “Don’t Make Me Over.” SUDS: THE ROCKING 60’S MUSICAL opens on February 7th and continues through February 17th.
“One of the many things I love about living in Palm Springs is Modernism Week,” Chuck Yates says. “I enjoy the celebration of the “Mid-Century” period of time that was so important to the evolution of this city. Last year, we presented BOEING BOEING to coincide with Modernism Week, which was set in the swinging 60s. It was the perfect complement to the Modernism event, and the results were astounding! The entire run completely sold out! This year I found this wonderful little musical called SUDS, which is also set in the early 60s that is just a fantastic trip down memory lane!”
On March 10th at 2 p.m., CSW will offer a very special, FREE theatrical event as part of their new “PLAY DATES” series. Renowned actor and Emmy Award winner, Laurence Luckinbill will present a reading of his critically acclaimed, one-man play, CLARENCE DARROW TONIGHT! Mr. Luckinbill’s award nominations include a Drama Desk, an Emmy and a Tony for CLARENCE DARROW TONIGHT, LYNDON and THE SHADOW BOX respectively. Other credits include the original cast of ground-breaking THE BOYS IN THE BAND as well as the movie version and STAR TREK – THE FINAL FRONTIER.
PLAY DATES is part of Coyote StageWorks’ community and educational outreach series and is FREE to the public through an arrangement with the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Annenberg Theater. For more details on this free performance please visit www.coyotestageworks.org.
Wrapping up the Coyote StageWorks 2012/13 Season is the Tony Award & Drama Desk Award Winner, TRU, by Jay Presson Allen. Set in 1975, TRU is a fascinating look inside the mind of one of America’s most controversial authors, Truman Capote. This poignant comedy drama takes place in Truman’s magnificent New York Apartment where he lives in exile, having been shunned by his elite, Manhattan social circle for telling the world their most intimate secrets in Esquire magazine. Adapted from Capote’s words and work, this devastatingly witty play is a truthful portrait of a complex and colorful man. Coyote StageWorks is fortunate to be one of the few theatre companies granted the rights to perform TRU since its premier in 1989. TRU opens on April 18th and runs through April 28th.
